Ubuntu 9.04 Released

23rd April 2009

Canonical, the sponsor of Ubuntu, announced today that Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop and Server Editions are available to download from Thursday 23 April.

For the Server Edition, new enhancements include release 84 of the KVM visualization hypervisor, clustering support in Samba and easier mail server setup with out-of-the-box Dovecot-Postfix integration. In addition, the Server Edition will preview Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC). Ubuntu is the first commercially-supported distribution to enable businesses to build cloud environments inside their firewalls. Organisations can explore the benefits of cloud computing without the data or security issues associated with moving data to an external cloud provider.

For the Desktop Edition, new enhancements include shorter boot speeds (some as short as 25 seconds), OpenOffice 3.0, GNOME 2.26 and X.Org 1.6.

Both editions include Linux kernel 2.6.28 with ext4 filesystem support.

Ubuntu 9.04 is available now as a pre-installed option on all desktops and servers.
